The rains which have been experienced in recent weeks are expected to continue with the Meteorological Services Department confirming that several parts of the country will receive rainfall this coming weekend.

According to latest predictions by the Meteorological Service Department, the rains being experienced in various parts of the country are likely to continue, with some heavy downpours possible in the Mashonaland provinces.

“We are expecting to continue receiving sporadic thunders in most parts of the country except for Matebeleland South where it will be dry. More rains covering the whole country are predicted during the weekend,” said James Ngoma a meteorologist.

While the anticipated prolonged wet spell is expected to bring hope of salvaging an average harvest by most farmers whose crop has recovered from moisture stress experienced in the first half of 2019 to 2020 summer cropping season, rains pounding most parts of the country have caused infrastructural damage while landslides in Vumba on Saturday last week blocked access to the iconic Leopard Rock Hotel.

Poor drainage systems in some parts of Harare caused flooding in homes built on wetlands. In Mashonaland Central, some areas near the flooded Hoya River are still cut off. Matabeleland North Provincial Minister of State, Richard Moyo said the situation was now under control in Binga where one person died and over 30 others were left homeless following heavy rains which caused flooding, the affected families were being housed in temporary structures.
