Disability isn’t inability: Laizah Singadi’s Book “Akarangarirwa Pakukutu”

In her book, “Akarangarirwa Pakukutu” – a Shona Novel, Laizah Singadi reminds humankind that no one chooses to be born with a disability hence the need to treat everyone as equal.

“Everyone born with a disability should be respected. They are people like us and are only differently-abled. These people actually possess talents or gifts that the able-bodied might not have. Due to what I witnessed in as far as stigma and discrimination is concerned, I decided to put pen to paper and came up with my inaugural novel, “Akarangarirwa Pakukutu” so as to educate the masses on the need for equality despite differences in physical appearance,” Singadi said.

The talented writer pleaded with Spiked Online Media to reproduce her book verbatim for the advantage of Shona speakers who constitute the majority of the Zimbabwean population.

Below is the novel:

Chitsauko 1

“Iwe Mai Manatsa. Nyatsonditaurira kuti mwana akasiyana nevamwe wakabvepi naye. Tarira uone ndiani anoda tsvina dzakadai. Chokwadi handisati ndamboona mashura akadai. AYA NDIWO ANONZI MASHURA!” Vakapopota baba vaManatsa

Vakambotura befu ndokuti zvavo nde-e pana Manatsa, mwanasikana wavo akanga akaberekwa aine utera mumitezo yake.

Mai Manatsa: “Ko! Nhai Baba Manatsa?”

Baba Manatsa: “Ha-a! Dhemeti mhani. Haikona kunditi Bwabwa Mwanatsa. Mudzinza redu hamuna munhu wakadaro. Handinzi baba Manatsa ini, asi hauzive zita rangu kani? Kutoti Tanyanyisa zvikange nani. Uchataura zvako kuti ndiani baba vemwana uyu. Ini handizvare chigoritoto chakadai.”

Mai Manatsa: “Ko, ndochiizve chomotaura pamberi pemwana? Hamuoni kuti mavakukanganisa here? Chandakatadza chiiko nhai baba iwe-e? Chokwadi Mwari ndioneiwo. Yangu nhamo pano pasi ndeyeyi?”

Baba Manatsa: “Nhamo yako pano pasi ndeyekubereka chidzoi chako ka-a ichi. Unoti imwe ndeyei?”

Achinzwa hurukuro yababa vake namai vake Manatsa aingonoshushikana mumoyo make akamboedza kubvunza: “Ko, kuremara imhaka here? Sandivo mai vakasaka ndiberekwe ndakadai. Ko! Baba vanozviitirei chokwadi? Asi vanofunga kuti kuremara zvareva hapana chandinogona kuita kani?”

Tanyanyisa akatanga kuseka kuita sebenzi ranhonga roro. Akachururuka misodzi nokuseka. Akamudadira nokuganza achiti, “Nhaiwe chikomana, unofunga kuti ndiri Tenzi wako kanhi ini. Enda unodana Mwari vako vauye kuzokudzakisa.” Apo aitaura achibhwibhwinyika kuratidza kusvotesa.

Mukomana aiva neurema uya akaedza kukumbira, “Mukoma wangu ndinokumbirawo ruyamuro rwenyu nokuti parizvino ndiri panguva yakaoma. Mukandibatsirawo ndinokupai zvose zvamunoda.”

“Ihehede uriii…. zvakaoma. Ndikati ndinoda kutengerwa motokari unonditengera here iwee.’’ Akatowedzera kuseka Tanyanyisa.

Nerimwe zuva Tanyanyisa ari kuchikoro akasangana noumwe mukomana aive akaremara zvekare. Achingonomuti ba-a, chiso chakabva chashanduka kwava kutanga kufinyamisa chiso chake, kushata kwose kuchibva kwazochibuda pachena, aitoita seaiona tsvina asi ari munhu. Sezvineiwo mukomana aive anzwa nenyota nenzara.

Nechomumwoyo aingoti deno ndikawana anondiyamura. Chiso chake chakanyevenuka achiona Tanyanyisa. Chaasina kuziva ndechokuti ainge asangana nemunhu aive nomwoyo webwe. Iye aitoti awana dziva rokuwana zvose zvaaida kuyamurwa nazvo.

“Hevo ka-a nhai hama yangu. Ufunge hako, ndafara pandakuona. Moyo wangu wabva wanyevenuka. Ndabva ndaziva kuti muyamuri ndamuwana. Pari zvino nhamo yangu ndeye nyota. Haunawo here mvura undiyamurewo nokuti nyota yandikanda kwamayereko. Pahuro pangu patooma kuti papata uye nzara yave kundibvunza mutupo. Handizive kwokuwana mvura sezvo ndisingazive kuti ndichazosangana netsime kupi. Ndokumbirawo rubatsiro shamwari yangu.” Uyu ndiTafara aitaura.

“Ihehede uriiii zvakaoma sekunamata! Iwe mwana iwe unonditi shamwari kuti takafanana here? Tarira uone ini ndine mitezo yose. Ko iwe? Makumbo wakaisepi? Nungo dzinokuuraya ukati rega ndiite mufamba nyore wokufamba wakagara. Kekekekeke’’ AkatauraTanyanyisa achibva aoma zvake nokuseka. Apa akanyatsosekera svoto chaiyo. Izvi zvakarwadza Tafara zvikuru, akatanga kufunga kana paine chaaive atadza asi akachishaya.

Tanyanyisa akabudisa chigubhu chemvura ndokumuratidza oti, “Tarira uone, mvura ndinayo iyi asi handidi nayo. Mvura yangu inonwiwa nevanhu vane mitezo yakakwana. Handipi zvigoritoto ini. Kana mbuva ndinayo zvekare asi sezvandareva, HANDIDI! Ndave kuenda ini. Famba-famba chikomana uchawana tsime.”

Tafara akati kanhaa nemashoko aTanyanyisa. Akambozvidemba kuti chaakange azviitira chinyi? Asi akangoti nechomumwoyo ‘Seka urema wafa.’

Uyuwo Tanyanyisa akafamba achienda asina kana hanya nezvaaive asiya aita. “Amai ndine nyaya yandinayo yandabva nayo kuchikoro. Ndasangana nerimwe zigoritoto ranga risina mitezo yakakwana rikandikumbira zvokudya ndikabva ndamunyima ini. Kasi vanofunga kuti isu tinongopa kani? Hazvifaniri kuzodai kani amai. Ndamuseka zvokuti kana naiye atozvionawo kuti haaa pakaipa. Izvi zvandisvota amai.”

“Zigoritoto riiko nhai zai regondo rangu.”

“Ndechimwe chimunhu chandaona chisina mitezo yakakwana.”

“Aaaah! nhai mwanangu, Ko wadarireiko. Unomboziva here kuti zvawaita izvi Mwari havazvide? Unoti deno wamupa ndipo paaizodyawo newe here? Zvawaita izvi hazvina kunaka. Chokwadi kaa teerera pose padzinorumwa dzako nzeve. Nerimwe ramazuva Mwari vachakurangawo. Dai uri umwe wachinja maitiro ako. Vakuru pavakati seka urema wafa vaiziva uye vakange vaona hupenyu kuti imhindupindu.” Vakapinndura Mai Tanyanyisa.

Zvose izvi zvaingopinda zvichibuda. Zvaitoita sezvaitorwa nemhepo. Aiisa zvitanda munzeve. Hapana kana chimwe chete chaainzwa. Aitofunga kuti aishushwa, dzamara akure Tanyanyisa haana kumboshandura moyo. Izvi zvakaita sezvaitova muropa.

Tanyanyisa raive rino rume rakayamwa rikaguta. Aiva nemhino hombe yaiita seichakaropedzera vamwe mweya wokufema. Aivawo akasimba zviri pakati nepakati, aine chiso chaive chakatsetseka sechomwana mudiki. Pose paaifamba vanhu vaisara vachimutaura pamusana peganda rake.

Sezvo akange awana basa rourairidzi, mari yokuroora haina kumunetsa. Akaroora tsvarakadenga yake, uno mudzimai mushava akareba zviri pakati nepakati. Pamusikana uyu kushanda ndipo paive pamusha. Aiita mabasa ose apamusha asinganyunyuti. Vakomana vazhinji vaimuyemura zvokuti pavakanzwa kuti aroorwa naTanyanyisa vakarwadziwa. Vamwe ndivo vaisazvitenda kuti zvaive zvedi.

Pasina nguva varoorana, mudzimai waTanyanyisa akazvitakura. Mufaro wakazara panaTanyanyisa asi aisaziva zvaive mberi.

Sezvineiwo, Mwari vanongoita zvido  zvavo. Tanyanyisa akabva atanga kurangwa nedenga. Mukukwana kwenguva mudzimai wake akasununguka katsvarakadenga kake, wanike kane urema. Izvi zvakabvarura Tanyanyisa nehasha asi akayedza kuzvishingisa ndokungonyebera mufaro wenhema.

Achiti pfacha pamusha pake, masamba akabva asiyana. Shavi riye rakabva rasvika, pakarepo akabva atanga kudya magaka mambishi. Urwu rwakabva rwava rwiyo rwemisi yose.

Hama dzaTanyanyisa padzakangonzwa runyerekupe rwokuti kwaive kwabarwa mwana ane urema, vakatoita kuungana pamba apa vachiti vatukiridze muroora uyu. Vakagara pamba apa vachiti mumwe aituka mumwe achiita zvaafungawo.

Amai vaTanyanyisa Havana kumbobvira vafarira zvose zvaiitwa nomwana wavo pamwe nehama dzavo. Zvaivadya moyo sezvo vaiziva kuti mwana wavo ndiye aive honzeri yazvose. Vaimboedza chose kutsiura mwana wavo asi vaishaya muteereri wamashoko avo. Vakazosvika pakushaika nenyaya yechirwere cheHigh Blood Pressure(BP) vakachengetwa havo. Tanyanyisa akatozosara owedzera sezvo ainge oziva kuti hakuna chaizomukanganisa.

Mwana wavo, Manatsa, akakura achishungurudzika nezvaiitwa nababa vake. Vaigaroshungurudza mudzimai wavo pamusana pomwana wavaive vakabereka. Izvi zvakaita kuti mukadzi wavo ashushikane zvakanyanya. Akambofunga kuzviuraya napamusana pemagara moyo avaigaroputitsirwa zuva nezuva.

Sezvo VaMandigona, mai vaManatsa vaiva mutendi wechiChristo kusvondo yeKirike Katorike rechiRoma, vakazobatsirwa nababa vezvomweya nevamwewo vechikuru kudzora moyo wavo. Vakazova netarisiro yokuti nerimwe ramazuva zvose zvaizonaka. Chimwe chinhu chavakabata pavaitsanangurirwa nokupangwa mazano ndechokuti Mwari vaive nechinangwa nazvo nokudaro vaiziva kuti ramangwana ravo rinenge rakadii kana vakaendesa mwana kuchikoro.

 VaMandigona vakamboedzawo kuenda kumaporofita aive munzvimbo yavo asi zvakakona n’anga murapwa achida. Vakazogamuchira vakangoti nechemumoyo “Zvandapihwa naMwari wangu ndinotora.’’ Vaida mwana wavo zvakapfurikidza.

Chitsauko 2

Nguva yekuenda kuchikoro yakasvika. Baba vaManatsa vakaramba kuti mwana wavo aende kuchikoro. Vaisatomboda kunzwa munhu anotaura nezve nyaya iyi. Vaiti vakazvinzwa vaidya magaka mambishi.

Nerimwe zuva mudzimai wavo akafunga zvekumbovanyenga mukanwa achifunga kuti zvimwe vaizobvuma asi Vakatozvidenhera mago. Vakapotserwa mabwe pakarepo, “Aaah! Iwe-e kuchikoro kwei? Handiendese chirema kuchikoro ini, apo oti mwanasikana. Handitambisi mari yangu zvakadaro. Iwe endesa chigoritoto chako ichocho wega. Deno aitozoroorwa zvaive nani ndaidyawo mari , zvino ndiani angada kuroorawo munhu akadaro. Haaaaa zvakaoma chokwadi”

Mashoko aya akashungurudza Va Mandigona zvokuti misodzi yakatanga kuyerera sedziva. Vakatanga kuzvidya moyo. Kana iyewo Manatsa aingokuvarira mukati. Zvaive zvakarema kuti ataure. Aitya kuzokudubutswa pa wheelchair sezvaaive akamboitwa apo akabatanidzirwa pairohwa amai vake. Izvi zvaigaromunetsa zuva nezuva.

Baba Manatsa vaitoita somunhu akagarwa chaiye nokuti zvimwe zvavaitaura haaaa nekudzidza kwavo zvaisaenderana. Somunhu aive murairidzi vaitofanirwa kugamuchira chimiro chaive nomwana wavo asi ivo vaisatove nebasa nazvo.

Nerimwe zuva Manatsa akagara namai vake vachitandara zvavo, akatanga kushaya kuti otanga sei karungano kake. Akambokwenya musoro kasingapere ndokuti koso koso achigadzirisa pahuro. Mushure ndokuzoti, “Nhai amai, ndinewo kanyaya kangu.” 

“Ndekeiko nhai dangwe rangu?”

“Ko-o ko-o ndichaendawo kuchikoro here sevamwe vana?” Apo aitaura achinzwisa tsitsi kwazvo achiratidza kushungurudzika zvikuru. Chiso chake chaive chakasvava, chaiita sochomunhu afirwa.

 Amai vake vakamboti koso koso, ndokutora chinguva vasati vapindura vachishushikana mupfungwa dzavo kuti vomuti kudii. Vakambotura befu. Pave paye vakazoti “Mwanangu, uchaenda kana mari yawanikwa. Izvozvi ndichambozama kuti ndodii.”

 “Ko baba vanotii nenyaya yekuti ndiende kuchikoro?”

Aingobvunza nhando hake asi aiziva kuti baba vake vaisada kuti aende kuchikoro. Amai vake vakabva vagumirwa kushaya neromuromo zvaro. Vakabva varamba vakati mwiro kunyarara kuita sezvinonzi hapana chavaive vanzwa. Misodzi yakajenga mumaziso ndiye chururu serwizi rweSave.

“Ko-o, asi hamuchataurisu kani nhai amai? Ingawani ndakubvunzai nhai amai asi hamusi kudaira.”

“Mwanangu zvakaoma, baba vako vakati havana mari yekuti uende kuchikoro. Hameno Mwari wacho! Ini ndongozviisa kunaShe. Sandini ndakazvida, zvose zvaive zvinangwa zvaiye Nyadenga. Ndichaedzawo nepose pandinogona kuti uendewo kuchikoro savamwe vana.”

“Musazvidye moyo amai zvichanaka. Jehova haarasise vana vake, kunamata ndicho chinhu chikuru. Ndinovimba kuti rimwe ramazuva, Mwari achatinzwawo.”

“Ichokwadi mwanangu deno Mwari vakatirwirawo.”

Pakarepo mai nemwana vakatanga kuyerera misodzi. Matama akaita senzizi iri misodzi.

Sezvineiwo, kuita kwaMwari kunoshamisa. Hapana munhu aifungaa kuti zvichasvika pakadaro. Amai vaive vorasa tariro yavo asi Manatsa haana kumborasa tariro, aingopira kuna Tenzi chete zuva nezuva. Baba vaManatsa vaisada kunzwa munhu anongotaura zvekusvondo pamba pavo. Manatsa namai vake vaitoita zvokubiridzira kuenda kusvondo kana baba vasipo. Baba vaManatsa vaiti vakanzwa kuti Manatsa naMai vake vaive vaenda kusvondo, musi iwoyo vaidira jecha musadza. Vaipopota pamwe nekurova mai nemwana zvose. “Chokwadi amai, Mwari vazondirangarira. Mwari munoshamisa. Baba vachanyara. Saka ndinotanga riinhi kuenda kuchikoro kwacho?’’ Apa Manatsa aitaura asisina kunyatsogadzikana nemufaro mukuru. Anga akutoona akapfeka yunifomu achiteerera mudzidzisi wake.

“Aah!!! Nhai mamoyowe-e matononokerwasu nekuenda?’’

“Chokwadi tazviona kuti mwanasikana wenyu afara. Kana nemiwo tiri kuona mufaro mukuru wamuinawo. Ko baba vake varipi?”

Murume aiva mutema pana vose ndiye akabvunza achida kunyatsonzwisisa zvaitaurwa naManatsa. Mai Manatsa hapana chavakasiirira, vakanyatsotora twose ndokutupakura sezvazviri. Izvi zvakasiririsa varume vose vaive vauya. Vaviri vavo vakajenga misodzi ndokuzoita savarume kuti isabuda.

“Amai regai kuzvidya mwoyo nokuti Mwari vakupindurai.  Mwana wenyu achatanga kuenda kuchikoro kutanga kwegore rinouya. Tisu tichauya kuzomutora kana zvikoro zvave pedyo kuvhurwa.”

Musi uyu waive musi wa15 Mbudzi gore ra1994, Manatsa akange atove nemakore masere okuberekwa. Mufaro wakabva wazara pamba apa. Mai Manatsa vakatanga kunetseka kuti votii sezvo vaisada kudura zvaive zvaitika. Chimwe chavaizezera kuvaudza ndechokuti vaitya kuti vaizoramba kuti Manatsa aende kuchikoro.

Vakambotora chinguva vasati vapindura vachingoshushikana mupfungwa. Pave paye ndipo pavakazoti, “Hapana chamboitika baba vomwana. Kungofarawo zvako, mati tongoti undundu mazuva ose here? Tinokasiraka kuchembera, nyama dzinofanirwa kumbotambanukawo nokunyemwerera kana kumbofara.”

“Ha-a! mufaro uyu ndakapedzesera kumuona Manatsa asati avepo.”

Tanyanyisa akatanga kuzvitongesa mumoyo. Akatadza kunyatsoziva chaitora nzvimbo. Akaedza kunyengerera kana kutyisidzira asi kwaiva kuteya nzou neriva.

 Hapana akamboda kuvazivisa dzamara gore ratopera.

Chitsauko 3

Tanyanyisa akati ndee kutarisa kuwaya yekupedzisira, hana yake yakarova achiona motokari yakanzi ‘DISABILITY DOES NOT MEAN INABILITY’ yakananga pamba pake. Akati zvimwe airota, pfungwa ndokuita gakava nemibvunzo yakawanda.

“Asi pane apara mhosva kani? A-ah! Ingava iri mhosva yei? Zvino vanogodei pano? Ko ndiani avati vauye? Ko pane mutambo weyi pano? Ndianiko ambovakoka pano?”

Ukuwo VaMandigona vachinzwa kutinhira kwemotokari vakadongorera nepafafitera. “varume vaya vaireva idi nhai?”

Vakabva vadana chigondora chavo kuti chiuye chizozvionera choga. Akauya ari chamuhwiriri achimhanyisa wheelchair yake, aida kuona kuti zvii zvairehwa namai vake.

Achiona motokari iye yaive yakambouya, chiso chakabva chazara mufaro wakavirikwa. Amai vake vakatora mabhegi avaive vatorongedza kare ndokukanda mubhuti yemotokari yaive yakamira.

Mai nemwana vakazadzwa nomufaro mukuru. Zvose izvi zvaive mumaziso aTanyanyisa. Zvakamushamisa kwazvo kuti chii chaitora nzvimbo. Havana kuda kumbozeza kubvunza. Pakarepo vakabva vangoti, “Ko kwauyeiko zvomotiza musha? Ko mikwende yoendepi?” Apa chiso chaTanyanyisa change chizere ukasha hwakasangana nokukatyamara.

“Hakusi kutiza musha Baba Manatsa. Ndakazonyanya kufarisa ndikazokanganwa kukuudzai kuti Manatsa achange oenda kuchikoro. Parizvino atouya kuzotorwa.” Pavaitaura apa vaiita sevachabata denga nomufaro.

 “KUCHIKORO!”

“Hongu ave kuenda kuchikoro. Maiti anogara pano pamba kusvikira riinhi? Handiti anewo kodzerowo yake yokudzidza nevamwe vakaita saye. Muchatozomuona panopera kotoro ino.”

“Iwe, iwe ndati ari kuendepi kwete zvowotaura izvi zvisina maturo?”

“Ari kuenda kuchikoro kuJairos Jiri kuBulawayo. Manga matii?”

 “Ko kusandizivisawo sababa vomusha hanzii?”
