The high quality of cameras on smartphones these days mean that you no longer need a professional camera in order to create a masterpiece video.

This was proven at the 2020, 48 Hour Film Project competition, held in Durban, where 50 aspiring filmmakers were tasked with creating a short film over a weekend. The competing teams were given a character, prop, line of dialogue and a genre and then had 48 hours to conceptualise, write, shoot, edit, and score a 4-7 minute film.

In keeping with its belief of supporting and developing emerging, talented individuals, the South African division of HUAWEI Mobile Services provided support to the 48 Hour Film Project to recognise and reward the winner of the Best Mobile Produced Film category. The winner was provided with a brand new HUAWEI P40 Lite smartphone to ensure that they continue to create masterpieces whenever and wherever they go. That honour was claimed by Team Elixir Films and Productions.

“It gives me great delight knowing that 50 films were successfully made in one weekend with a crew and cast of over 600 people throughout KwaZulu-Natal and I want to thank HUAWEI for being a part of this journey with us. Thank you for supporting mobile filmmakers and assisting us in growing the industry, developing the youth in particular, and encouraging them to monetise their smartphones,” comments Nerusha Sadapal, Producer of the Durban based 48 Hour Film Project.

The 50 short films created by the entrants will also be showcased on the HUAWEI VIDEO app platform, adding to the array of local content already on the platform. You can also view over 1,500 hours of other local content from partners such as Green Renaissance, Beautiful News, Kasi360, and Turney Woods Media.
